A Crisp Landscape in German Village

This home blends the historic and the contemporary - and so does its landscaping, with simplicity and elegance.

Many photographs for this project were taken by David Bernstein.

Being in German Village, the design respects the historic structure, including the old limestone steps at the original front door, with a new symbolic brick walkway. A limestone walkway was allowed to lead to a new modern front door and steps, whose design is inspired by history.

The whole property was overcome with invasive tree roots, creating severe water issues in the basement and foundation of the historic structure. The need to remove the existing plant materials gave an opportunity for the design of the yard to reflect the homeowner’s personal style.

A limestone stepping-pad path to the backyard leads to a wrought iron fence and gate, allowing passersby on the sidewalk to take a peek into the back yard.

Not being in public view, the back yard tilts more contemporary, which flowed from the home’s inside style. This patio is a light-wash concrete with warm light-gray integral color, with saw cut joints.

This attention to detail is something that makes each project unique and aligned with the style of each homeowner.

Hornbeam hedges line the sides of the property, with sheared taxus hedges and liriope. The additional plant pallet is simple, with only rounded boxwoods and vinca ground cover. Large planter pots decorate with seasonal color.
